§ 1. Election of president.

  • (a)

    One of the members of the council shall be elected by the council as its president at the first meeting in January and shall serve until the first meeting in January next following or until his successor be elected. Candidates for president shall be nominated by any member of the council. The city council president shall be elected by roll call vote of the majority of the entire membership of the council sworn to office.

    (b)

    A sitting president may be removed upon a two-thirds vote of the council. The vote to remove may be initiated by any member of the council by motion to rescind the election of the president. Advance notice of such a vote shall be provided to the public in conformity with the requirements of section 21 of chapter 30A of the General Laws (Open Meeting Law).

    (c)

    In the event that the motion to rescind is adopted, the floor shall be open to nominations for president and the office shall be filled for the unexpired term in the same manner as is used in the election of the president at the first meeting in January.
