§ 17-111. Places where parking is prohibited generally.

  • No person shall park a vehicle in any of the places set forth in this section. Vehicles found parked in violation of the provisions of this section may be moved by or under the direction of an officer and at the expense of the owner to a place where parking is permitted.

    (1)

    Within an intersection.

    (2)

    Upon any sidewalk.

    (3)

    Upon any crosswalk.

    (4)

    Upon a roadway where parking is permitted unless both wheels on the right side of the vehicle are within 12 inches of the curb or edge of the roadway, except upon those streets which are designed as one-way streets. On such one-way streets vehicles shall be parked in the direction in which such vehicle is moving and with both wheels within 12 inches of this curb. This shall not apply to streets or parts of streets where angle parking is required by these regulations.

    (5)

    Upon any roadway where the parking of a vehicle will not leave a clear and unobstructed lane at least ten feet wide for passing traffic.

    (6)

    Upon any street or highway within ten feet of a fire hydrant.

    (7)

    Upon or in front of any private road or roadway.

    (8)

    Upon any street or highway within 20 feet of an intersecting way, except alleys.

    (9)

    Within 15 feet of the wall of a fire station or directly across the street from such station; provided, that signs are erected acquainting the driver of such restriction.

    (10)

    Alongside or opposite any street excavation or obstruction when such stopping, standing or parking would obstruct traffic.

    (11)

    Upon any tree belt as defined in section 17-1.

    (12)

    In any area located on private property which is open to the public and is designated either by upright sign or by ground markings as a fire lane.

    (13)

    In or upon any space designated for the parking of motor vehicles which has been posted as being reserved for the parking of motor vehicles either owned and operated by disabled veterans or by handicapped persons pursuant to section 17-134 or any other ordinance of the city unless the motor vehicle so parked shall bear the distinctive number plates as authorized by M.G.L.A. c. 90, § 2; or shall display the special parking identification plate for vehicles which transport handicapped persons as authorized by M.G.L.A. c. 90, § 2; or shall bear an official identification of the motor vehicle as being one owned and operated by a handicapped person as issued by the public officials of any other state of the United States or of any province of Canada.

    (14)

    No heavy vehicle in excess of 2 ½ tons, shall park on any city street or way for a period exceeding two hours unless actively engaged in the loading or unloading of goods or wares. There will be no parking of such vehicles between the hours of 9:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. for any reason without a permit obtained by the chief of police. At no time shall a trailer, not attached to a registered vehicle be allowed to remain on any street or way.

    For the purpose of this subsection, the definition of "heavy vehicles" shall mean, vehicles in excess of 2½ tons G.V.W.R. vehicles with dual wheels, campers or any vehicle or combination in excess of 30 feet.
