§ 14-21. Charges for towing and storage.

  • (a)

    The charges for towing and storage of motor vehicles when such towing is ordered by the police shall be the rate as set by the Massachusetts Department of Telecommunications and Energy as set forth in M.G.L.A. c. 159B, § 6B.

    (b)

    For each motor vehicle towed by order of the police, there shall be assessed a one-time administrative fee in accordance with the following schedule:

    (1)

    Commercial motor vehicle with one or more than one of the following: (A) three or more axles; (B) a gross motor vehicle weight of 26,001 pounds or greater; (C) an unusually heavy, bulky or dangerous load which requires extensive handling—Fee of $100.00;

    (2)

    Non commercial motor vehicle or commercial motor vehicle not subject to the above-stated criteria —Fee of $50.00.

    (c)

    In addition to the administrative fee as assessed, there may be paid by such private contractor as is hired by the police department to tow and store such motor vehicles from the fees charged in accordance with M.G.L.A. c. 159, § 6B such fee per vehicle as is established through a competitive bid process administered by the police department no less frequently than once each three years.
